    What is a hydrangea root?

The supplement known as hydrangea root is derived from the roots and subterranean stems, or rhizomes, of these plants. Due to the supplement's supposed diuretic effects—that is, its capacity to enhance urine output—it has been used in traditional medicine for hundreds of years to treat bladder infections and prostate problems.

How do I use hydrangea root?

Online retailers may sell hydrangea root supplements in the following forms: liquid extract, powder, syrup, capsules, and tinctures. One tablespoon (15 grams) of dried or powdered hydrangea root is usually steeped in an 8-ounce (250 mL) cup of water to make a tea.

    Hydrangea root benefits:

Hydrangea root contains chemicals that may reduce the symptoms and guard against autoimmune diseases, such as psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, asthma, and obesity, which are often associated with chronic (long-term) inflammation.

◉ Antioxidant properties: Antioxidants are unique chemicals that shield your body from the damaging effects of free radicals (also known as ROS) and oxidative stress. Your body may experience severe organ damage, many negative consequences, and even illnesses like cancer if the quantity of free radicals in it skyrockets.

However, a class of substances known as coumarins, found in hydrangea roots, have antioxidant qualities. Hydrangea extract showed strong antioxidant properties in animal experiments by reducing the levels of oxidative stress indicators such as MDA and nitric oxide. However, further human research is required to validate these results.

◉ Anti-inflammatory effects: Your body naturally uses inflammation as a defense against unwelcome stimuli such as damage, infection, and disease. Tumor necrosis factor, cytokines, interleukins, and nitric oxide are examples of pro-inflammatory indicators that your body releases to cause inflammation.  On the other hand, an extended period of inflammation or an asymptomatic inflammatory response might seriously harm your organs. For inflammation levels to be controlled, anti-inflammatory systems must also exist.

Compounds like coumarin and its derivatives, such as sweroside, loganin, and skimmin, are found in hydrangea root and have anti-inflammatory qualities. In experiments on animals, hydrangea extract suppressed inflammation by controlling pro-inflammatory marker levels and preventing inflammatory cells from penetrating the tissues.

Hydrangea root contains chemicals that may reduce the symptoms and guard against autoimmune diseases, such as psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, asthma, and obesity, which are often associated with chronic (long-term) inflammation. However, these results have not yet been tested in human populations.

◉ Improved kidney health: In a rat investigation, hydrangea extract was shown to provide protection against kidney injury. Because hydrangea root dissolves calcium, it may also be used to treat kidney stones. Blood levels of certain compounds, such as creatinine and urea (BUN), may rise if your kidney is damaged, wounded, or not functioning correctly. Additionally, the excretion of certain molecules, such as albumin, via urine may be heightened. However, in animal experiments, hydrangea extract was shown to lower blood creatinine, blood urea nitrogen, and urine albumin excretion levels in kidney-inflammatory mice.

This might be as a result of the advantageous effects of an active substance found in hydrangea roots called skimmin. Therefore, while these effects have not yet been shown in human populations, hydrangea extract may lessen the harm brought on by renal inflammation.

◉ Decreased blood sugar levels: Diseases like type 2 diabetes, which is primarily defined by elevated blood sugar levels, may benefit from hydrangea extract. In laboratory experiments, skimmin-containing hydrangea extract was able to lower insulin resistance and enhance blood sugar utilization.
