Blue sage, or Salvia azurea, is a beautiful and easy-to-grow plant for soils that are mostly moist to dry. This salvia doesn't need any winter protection in southern Minnesota, even though it comes from the middle states (see Range Map tab). It could also be called Pitcher Sage or Azure Blue Sage. Even though the plants aren't very dense, the rare, clear blue flowers can be seen from a distance in a grassland planting or a native setting. Among the many bright plains flowers of early fall, the blue is a lovely sight. From late summer to early fall, when Blue Sage is in bloom, lots of bees and butterflies come to drink the juice. If you rub or brush the leaves, they give off the smell that is typical of Salvia species. This keeps animals like deer and bunnies away as well. The hermit sphinx moth feeds on plants from the genus Salvia.
Using your candle, light the sage at a 45-degree angle and allow it to burn for 10 to 20 seconds. Step 2: Extinguish the flame completely, leaving just embers; smoke will emerge after. Step 3: To let the smoke diffuse across your area, move slowly.
Blue sage smoke can help clean the air by getting rid of germs and other dangerous things. During the cold and flu season, this can be very helpful. Some tests have shown that some kinds of sage can kill germs and may have other uses as well.
