Damiana Leaf is a supplement made from the dried leaves of the Turnera Diffusa plant, which has been used as a physical tonic and aphrodisiac in Central America by brewing the leaves into a tea and drinking it (with some references to the Mayan culture, but more recently Mexico). Not much is known about Damiana Leaf. Not many studies have been done on it, and most of the ones that have been done are trying to find the bioactive parts of the compound. Two studies on rats have shown that Damiana has aphrodisiac properties when the rats are sexually sluggish or tired. This effect could be duplicated by any adaptogen class supplement and is more likely due to Damiana's "physical tonic" qualities than to its aphrodisiac ones.
There is some evidence that it may make people feel less anxious, but since Damiana is a good source of Apigenin, these effects are probably true of any plant that contains Apigenin, which there are many (not limited to chamomile tea and lemon balm). Aside from that, there isn't much good evidence that Damiana can be used as an aphrodisiac. All current studies on humans that use Damiana are complicated by the use of multiple bioactive components, which makes it hard to judge Damiana itself.
Damiana is utilized by ingesting its fronds. The application of Damiana varies between men and women. It is hypothesized to enhance male sexual arousal and endurance. It is utilized to regulate menstruation and alleviate menopausal symptoms in females.
Damiana is used to treat headaches, bedwetting, depression, nervous stomach, and constipation. It is also used to prevent and treat sexual problems, as an aphrodisiac, and to boost and maintain mental and physical stamina. Some people smoke damiana to get a mild "high."
◉ Male Sexual Health - Damiana is especially good for men who have trouble getting and keeping an erection. It also helps men who worry that they won't be able to perform sexually well. Studies have shown that eating the plant slows down digestion and speeds up the flow of oxygen to the genital areas. This makes it much easier for men to get an erection and keep it going for longer. Another study says that using Damiana makes the erogenous zones, especially the genitals, more sensitive, which may help men feel more sexual pleasure.
◉ Female Sexual Health - Before the book "Love Potions, a Guide to Aphrodisiacs and Sexual Pleasures" by family and integrated medical practitioner Cynthia Watson, Damiana was thought to be a male-only aphrodisiac. In it, she showed evidence that androgens like testosterone might be able to wake up so-called "frigid" women, whose behavior is thought by some researchers to be caused by a lack of androgens. Watson also said that she saw women who used Damiana become more interested in sex. She also wrote, "It is said that if you drink it before bed, you will have sexual dreams." I can also say that Damiana makes my dreams at least a little bit strange, like something out of a Walt Disney movie.
◉ Antidepressant - One of the things that makes this herb work is a chemical called thymol. It is this chemical that gives Damiana its stimulating and life-enhancing effects on the mind and body. Damiana is often given by herbalists to people with mild to moderate depression, anxiety, and nervous exhaustion. Its stimulating and healing properties make it a useful herb for people with anxiety and depression at the same time, which can happen when they are stressed for a long time.
◉ Digestive Health - This versatile herb will help keep your digestive system healthy by making it easier for your body to break down fats and sugars. This mechanism is helpful because it speeds up the rate at which the body absorbs nutrients. This makes sure that the body gets the most nutrients possible from the food we eat. Damiana also helps clean out the digestive system by forcing the body to get rid of harmful chemicals and toxins that would normally slow down digestion. This natural herb can also be used to treat dyspepsia or digestion problems because it slows down digestion.
